TRACK-3: ORAL CANCER

Oral Cancer: Pathopysiology The term oral cancer includes cancers of the mouth and the pharynx. Several types of tissue make up the mouth and oropharynx. Most cases of oral cancer are because of cigarette smoking, heavy alcohol use or the use of both tobacco and alcohol consumptions. The stage of oral cancer is one of the most important factors in evaluating treatment options. A stage I oral cancer tumor means the primary tumor is 2 cm across or smaller and no cancer cells are present in nearby structures, lymph nodes or distant sites. A stage II oral tumor measures 2–4 cm across and no cancer cells are present in nearby structures, lymph nodes or distant sites. The oral tumor is larger than 4 cm across and no cancer cells are present in nearby structures, lymph nodes or distant sites is stage III. Stage IV is the tumor has invaded deeper areas and/or tissues.

TRACK-6: PREVENTIVE AND OPERATIVE DENTISTRY

Preventive dentistry is the practice of caring for one's teeth to keep them healthy. This helps to avoid cavities, gum disease, enamel wear, and more. Preventive dentistry prevents people from developing dental problems later on. Cavities, gingivitis, enamel loss, and periodontitis can all be avoided or mitigated with proper dental care. Operative dentistry dentistry concerned with restoration of parts of the teeth that are defective as a result of disease, trauma, or abnormal development to a state of normal function, health, and esthetics.

TRACK-7: ORTHODONTICS AND DENTAL IMPLANTS

Orthodontics is a branch of “dentistry” that specializes in treating patients with improper positioning of teeth when the mouth is closed (malocclusion), which results in an improper bite. Orthodontics also includes treating and controlling various aspects of facial growth (dentofacial orthopedics) and the shape and development of the jaw. An orthodontics specialist is called an orthodontist. An orthodontist uses a range of medical dental devices, including headgears, plates, braces, Implants, Cleft Lip and Palate etc. and use the recent advances in orthodontics like invisalign techniques.

A dental implant (also known as an endosseous implant or fixture) is a surgical component that interfaces with the bone of the jaw or skull to support a dental prosthesis such as a crown, bridge, denture, facial prosthesis or to act as an orthodontic anchor. The basis for modern dental implants is a biologic process called Osseo integration, in which materials such as titanium form an intimate bond to bone.

TRACK-8: FORENSIC DENTISTRY

Forensic dentistry is the application of dental knowledge to those criminal and civil laws that are enforced by police agencies in a criminal justice system. Forensic dentists are involved in assisting investigative agencies to identify recovered human remains in addition to the identification of whole or fragmented bodies; forensic dentists may also be asked to assist in determining age, race, occupation, previous dental history and socioeconomic status of unidentified human beings. Identification is done by the comparison of ante-mortem and post-mortem dental records and using the unique features visible on dental radiographs.

Forensic dentistry or forensic odontology is the proper handling, examination and evaluation of dental evidence, which will be then presented in the interest of justice. The evidence that may be derived from teeth is the age (in children) and identification of the person to whom the teeth belong.

TRACK-9: OROFACIAL MYOLOGY

Orofacial myology is a specialized professional discipline that evaluates and treats a variety of oral and facial(orofacial) muscle (myo) postural and functional disorders and habit patterns that may disrupt normal dental development and also create cosmetic problems. The principles involved with the evaluation and treatment of orofacial myofunctional disorders are based upon dental science tenets.

Orofacial myofunctional disorders (OMD) (sometimes called “oral myofunctional disorder", and “tongue thrust”) are muscle disorders of the face, mouth, lips, or jaw. Recent studies on incidence and prevalence of tongue thrust behaviors are not available. However, according to the previous research, 38% of various populations have OMD. The incidence is as high as 81% in children exhibiting speech/articulation problems.

TRACK-10: NANO DENTISTRY

The discovery of Nano dental materials such as Nano powders and Nano composites reinforced with Nano fillers are the most rapidly developing group of materials with excellent prospective for application in the field of dentistry. Some nanomaterial’s have also been developed to help with the remineralisation of the teeth after significant decay. Precisely, it brings forth a new era of local anesthesia’s, dentifrices (tooth paste), better treatment modalities in the management of gum problems, dental caries, tooth hypersensitivity and oral cancer by the usage of morphological, biophysical and biochemical properties of the oral cavity.

1. Superior hardness, flexural strength, modulus of elasticity, translucency, durability of Nano-dental materials and excellent handling properties of all Nano-dental products.

2. Faster and accurate diagnosis of oral diseases with small diagnostic machinery.

3. Reduced span of treatment procedures with faster healing properties.

The specialty of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS) as we know it now is bound to change drastically in our lifetime. The driving forces for this change are varied and multifactorial, some of which are the cost and length of training combined with the prevailing dichotomy in scope of practice between traditional and expanded areas of practice. The formation of sub-specialties within the specialty—oncologic and reconstructive surgery, facial aesthetics, hospital based practitioners and office based practitioners, dental and medically qualified practitioners complicate the issue further.

The International Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (IAOMS) has debated this vexatious issue ever since its inception 50 years ago. Unfortunately, it took most of the first forty years sparring on this issue within the Association. In 2001, it was finally decided through acceptance of the “International Guidelines for Training and Education in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery”.

Laskin attempts to address this problem by dividing the scope of oral and maxillofacial surgery into 3 parts: areas of expertise, competence and familiarity.

  • Areas of expertise include oral pathology/oral medicine, dentoalveolar surgery, pre prosthetic surgery (including implantology), and maxillofacial traumatology.
  • Areas of competence involve orthognathic surgery, temporomandibular joint surgery, and local reconstructive surgery.
  • Areas of familiarity are cleft lip and palate surgery, regional reconstructive surgery, oncologic surgery, craniofacial surgery, and cosmetic surgery.

In 2011, North America was the leader in terms of market share and is expected to maintain its leadership position in 2018. This can be attributed to the rapid adoption of advanced technologies such as CAD/CAM, along with relatively higher dental-health awareness across the population.
